Just got back from my first 10 day cruise. (I'm 33 and went with a girlfriend and 2 other
couples). The first thing you notice
standing in line waiting to board is how many 'old' people there are. They'd be whizzing
by you in wheelchairs, getting all
the special treatment! I remark upon this because it will creep up continuously later.
We had a cabin with a picture sized window which went beyond my expectations for size.
Very neat and clean, maximizing
space use for storage, clothing, etc. Each room comes with it's own safe that is locked
and unlocked with any card having a
magnetic strip, neat!
The ship itself is massive, opulent and new! Ten days later I still didn't know where all
the bars, lounges and dining rooms
were located. The dining room facilities are extraordinary with a head waiter, waiter,
assistant waiter, wine steward and bar
tender fussing about you at any given time. MAKE SURE to change your seating arrangement
if you are not happy with the
people you were stuck with. Heres the old thing again.. We sent one older couple
packing (they left of their own accord)
and were joined by another young couple on day two who switched from a 'geriatric' table
and we partied together for the
rest of the cruise!
The entertainment was good and bad. For the most part it was geared to an older crowd:
Ragtime to Rock dancers, an
Opera singer, a couple of guys who had hits in '59--that sort of thing. On the other hand,
we were joined by David Brennar
who did a 45 minute comedy routine a couple of Vegas jugglers and an illusionist that
weren't too bad. So you think the
disco is the place to finally 'get down'...but no, apparently Macarena still rules and the
old folks just love waving their arms
in the air to the tune of YMCA and the Village people...ugh! Putting in requests was also
a disaster.
The amenities on board are great! Ping Pong, 18 hole mini golf, exercise room and a host
of onboard activities. The only
comments that I would make here is that youll have to get yourself involved if you
want to participate! I've been to resorts
(Royal Solaris in Cancun) where you cant sit for two minutes without being dragged
off by the staff to be a judge in a bikini
contest, play beach volleyball, poolside aerobics, etc. Again, I feel this to be a product
of the age of the crowd but the sheer
size of the ship can also be a factor.
On the whole a vacation is what you make it. Our group was by far the rowdiest during the
trip with a variety of antics. (we
oooohed and aaaahed the desert selections as they were shown to us--oddly enough though by
day 6 an older table
adjacent to us started doing the same thing--if you cant bet'em join'em) I stressed
the age thing in my review to save
anyone from disappoint if that was their expectation. Everything else was fabulous and
need not be elaborated on--go
experience it yourself! I'd be more than happy to respond to any specific areas I've
omitted or clarification on any of the
above.
Ships ahoy...
