My daughter and I went on this cruise to celebrate my birthday. It was my first cruising experience and I enjoyed it
very much. The crew did a good job of organizing everything so that we could completely relax without hassle. The
shore excursions offered a wide variety of things to do. We went bike riding on Coronado in San Diego. It was a
refreshing but not too challenging ride. Our tour guide had everything ready for us when we got off the ship and
seemed to know the area well, so he was able to point out interesting sites along the way. After the bike trip, we
still had plenty of time to walk around the marina area of San Diego and have lunch in one of the restaurants. We
often chose to eat lunch off the ship after our excursions since it was usually more convenient than reboarding,
and the buffet lunches on Viking Serenade didn't impress us since they just had basic salads and deli trays.
Eating off the ship also gave us a chance to experience more of the port city we were visiting. In Catalina, we did
the sea kayaking excursion. It was a lot of fun and not as difficult as we expected. They had all the waterproof
clothing ready for us, which was comforting, since it was overcast and rather chilly while we were there. In
Ensenada, we hit some rain but still had a good time people watching from a second story patio in a Cantina, while
eating an authentic Mexican lunch and drinking margaritas. Found some good bargains on blankets, jewelry, and
liquor by wandering around the city too. We had the late dinner seating which allowed us to spend more time in
port. The dining room staff was very attentive and friendly, even granting special requests for items that weren't
on the menu. For example, our table mates, who were veteran cruisers, requested caviar as an appetizer for our
entire table on formal night, and our waiter got it for us without any hassle at all. There were always several
enticing choices on the menu, and we were never disappointed with our selection. The filet mignon and salmon
were particularly memorable and very well prepared. I also had a delicious flourless chocolate torte for dessert
one night. Yum!

The shows were well done with energetic and talented performers. One of the comedians had a potty mouth and
we found him more juvenile than entertaining. The only weak spot was the annoying cruise director who was
always hamming it up.

The Viking Serenade is an older, smaller ship than many major lines offer for longer cruises. It did show its age in
spots, but the crew kept it very clean. It is a great cruise for a quick getaway or for someone who wants to see
what cruising is all about. My daughter had taken one other cruise on Celebrity's Century when that ship was new
and said that overall, the cruise experience was pretty much the same on both ships, although the Century
sparkled a bit more and offered a few more amenities like a cafe and a cigar room. So if you want to take a short
cruise at a good value, this would a good choice.

Royal Caribbean - Viking Seranade - 4 Day Mexican Riviera

This was my first cruise and I could not have been more disappointed.

The ship was shabby filled shoddy furnishings. The decor is tasteless and lacks any character. Everything
was plastic, brass and glass and most likely stained, ripped or torn. All the exterior windows on the ship were
dirty obscuring your views of the ocean and the sunsets.

While at sea the ship had a continuous front to back rocking motion despite the calm seas. I am not prone to
seasickness but I would imagine that if you were and the seas were not calm, you would find it most
unpleasant.

The crew seemed to have an OK attitude but excellence was nowhere to be found. The all seemed to be
going through the motions. I imagine that this ship is the last stop for wayward employees before they no
longer work for Royal Caribbean.

The cabins were ridiculously small. The closets could barely hold an empty suitcase. All of the dresser
drawers were stuck and jammed. The bathroom was of the same caliber.

The “fitness center” was pathetic with no free weights or weight machines to be found, only old rickety
Stairmasters, bikes, and treadmills. Most hotels do better than this. The aerobics area was just part of the hall
with a dirty sloping floor. The pool was always packed with not enough old plastic lounge chairs to go around.
The service at the pool was spotty unless you wanted to buy an overpriced drink.

The food was always available but the quality was low. Except for dinners, meals had a cafeteria quality about
them. Dinners were acceptable, but on a cruise acceptable should be the exception. No fancy food, no
spectacular desserts,

The departure was a zoo. They kicked us out of our cabins at 8:00 AM with no direction and no working public
toilets. The halls remained packed with people and their luggage until we finally were let off at 10:00 AM. You
think for a ship that has been sailing for 10 years they would have finally worked out a smooth painless
procedure for getting off the ship.

On the plus side transportation to and from the airport was efficient and comenable.

Bottom line is to avoid this cruise at all costs. I hope this cruise was not representative of the cruise industry
or Royal Caribbean.

This cruise was the first for my husband and myself and on a whim, decided to bring along our 4
children, ages 5 to 16. I was nervous at first prior to embarking and wondering how it would go
trying to keep everyone together. It couldn't have been easier. My husband dropped us off at the
berth and went to park our vehicle and before he even returned, a porter had come along and
loaded all our suitcases and taken them to be loaded. That itself was a big help. Once we got in
line to embark I was surprised how quickly the line moves. There is more to do here then in
boarding an airplane but RCCL has made sure to have plenty of counter service personnel to get
you on the ship as quickly as possible.

Once on board, we easily found our rooms though I was a bit taken back by how many people were
all doing the very same thing we were. The halls and elevators were clogged the first day prior to
leaving port but once everyone was on the ship and we left ports, things quickly settled down and it
was never more crowded in the halls than any typical hotel except directly outside the dining rooms
at meal times.

The food at dinner was fantastic and our waiter Angehlco and his assistant Nelson were wonderful.
Angehlco was really superb and for being a younger man (about 28 or so), took exceptional care
of our children at the table, especially our 5 year old. It was easy to forget that we were not the only
diners in the room. Angehlco always had recommendations for the food each meal and his taste
was right on. Our older kids decided to be adventurous and try new things and was I ever surprised
by how they enjoyed their meals. Our little one didn't know we were trying our first grown-up meal
with the whole family and upon our being seated, promptly put his napkin on top of his head as the
linen had been arranged that evening to resemble crowns. Instead of becomming embarrassed, I
chose to laugh with the rest of the family and our waiters and I will remember to resite this tidbit to
him when he is older.

Our cabin steward was Rizalde and the whole family felt that he took such a personal interest in
each and every one of us. Three of the kids had their own cabin next door to ours and at times I
felt guilty everything wasn't as tidy as I usually am when traveling. We'd leave our rooms for
breakfast at the Windjammer Cafe, figuring to finish the tidying upon our return before leaving the
ship at the ports. Time and time again Rizalde was just too quick for me. We didn't even see him in
our hallway most times but every time we were gone, upon our return, you could tell someone had
come along and tidied up behind us and refilled the ice bucket. The sculptures with our bath towels
on our beds in the evening was a wonderous treat for the kids to see - we truly appreciated how
this gentleman took care of us and our children.

The younger two so thoroughly loved the children's programs that it was tears and frustrated 'I
don't wanna go's' when it was time to leave each evening. They loved it and it gave plenty of free
time for me and my husband in the evenings. The mid-age teens were a bit bored before dinner
and after dinner just wanted to hang out in their rooms. We inadvertantly took the 'we paid for a
cruise not a hotel room' attitude the first day and a half and told them they could not vegitate in
their rooms. One of the bonuses to sharing tables with unknown travelers is sharing information.
Upon breakfast the second day, three other couples shared stories from previous cruises about
their kids and all three reported their teens just wanted to hang out in their rooms (just like at
home) when they weren't actually doing something with the family. Since we got off the ship at
every port, there really wasn't too much time for them to vegitate anyway and we decided to just let
the older kids be and dictate their own time.

All in all, a wonderful time and worth every cent. A real bargain in any book as it averaged $385.00
per person for a 4 night cruise The evening we arrived home, I went immediately onto the Internet
to look up future cruises though the next one is just for me and the husband. We'll do one of the
short 3/4 days ones from Seattle and hire a babysitter to stay with the kids for the weekend.

We enjoyed our vacation only because we met some wonderful people & the ports were fabulous. The
ship is in POOR shape. Our bathroom the tiles were falling off the walls & floors, no water pressure in
shower, only ran hot or cold, shower heard fell off while showering, toilet wouldn't flush (our room plus
some of the public restrooms). Certain parts of the pool area smelled like someone puked on the deck.

Our cabin steward was always never to be found & when you did find him he was of NO help. Example:
cut finger and it was bleeding badly, asked for bandaid & he never came back with one.

The Pastry Chef is ignorant on how to cook/prepare for diabetics....on the menu they had a
'sugar-free cannolli' on the menu which had a sugar-free filling but the shell was coated with tons of
sugar. Even after I brought it to the attention of our server he insisted because it said 'sugar-free' on
the menu it was. There were 3 diabetics at our table including my husband and this could of been a
medical disaster. He asked for diet coke & some of the time the server brought over regular coke. The
food wasn't 'gourmet' at all...tastes no better than eating at Denny's or Sizzler.

My husband says 'they should take this ship out to the middle of the ocean and sink it'.

The people serving you on this ship made the voyage for us. We had heard she was an older ship, but
she seemed to be well maintained. Someone was always cleaning, polishing or painting. Our cabin
seemed small, but you get what you pay for. It was serviced three times a day. It was spotless. I didn't
know you could make so many designs/sculptures with six pillows. We heard no noise from outside,
however, the walls squeaked on into the night. Had enough storage for two people. The food. Well, it was
just OK. The best was in the main dining room and there were some allright chicken wings in the bar one
night. The waiter would replace anything you didn't care for or have the kitchen make something not on
the menu, but, it didn't help. Guess it's tough to make gourmet food for six hundred people at one time.
Our waiter, assistant waiter and wine steward were excellent. The bar staff always remembered your
drink. All of the crew greeted you with a smile and/or a comment everytime you crossed paths. The shore
excursions to San Diego and Catalina were OK. You can skip Ensenada. In Ensenada we rode with the
'safest bus driver' for approximately an hour to run a gauntlet of begging junk dealers in order to see
water squirt between some rocks. What a waste of time! RCC needs to rethink that tour. The passengers
were a mix of older people, families and couples. I don't see this as a honeymoon cruise.

Wonderful value - dining room staff and room stewardess were outstanding. Embarkation was slow as
boarding ramp was broken. First night entertainment in show room was pretty sad, but the next two
nights, the dancers and comedian were fabulous. Cruise director is so/so. Food was good, I am on a
diet so had the diet desserts - not so hot. Room was neat and location was great - had a window
facing forward with aview of bow so could watch the ship dock. Ensenada is very nice and fun to shop
there. But sitting in the channel between Catalina and San Pedro all day on Sunday seemed such a
waste - wish we had at least cruised around the islands off Santa Barbara as well. Also, photos were in
big piles so you had to dig for a long time to find them -seems like they could have been more
organized somehow. But the whole crew on the ship were outstanding - friendly and helpful - I loved
cruising on this ship when it was the Stardancer, and I still love this ship. I plan to go back again next
year.

I've tried to order the following comments chronologically. To begin with, the embarkation procedure was
the worst I've experienced in my nine cruises. The ship arrived in port late and by the 2 p.m.
embarkation time still hadn't disembarked the previous cruise. We had arrived at the port at noon. We
didn't get onboard until 4:30 - a wait of 4.5 hours in line! The worst part was that the lines outside the
terminal weren't managed at all by RCCL. People arriving later than we just cut into line. Lines were
randomnly spliced into other lines (BY RCCL). Basically, it was anarchy. One scary thing overheard was
that RCCL had run out of wheelchairs. So, if you're physically challenged, you might make an effort to
arrive earlier than normal. In any event, people were very angry with the embarkation and it was not a
good start to the vacation.

Onboard, we found the entertainment to be quite good. The cruise director (Karen Maybury) was very
entertaining and the Royal Caribbean Singers and Dancers were outstanding. The entertainment
onboard was better than on other cruiselines. Also, our cabin steward was wonderful. He was attentive,
low-profile and very efficient.

One thing that could've used improvement is the overall condition of the ship. At almost twenty years of
age, it is badly showing its age. Common areas are badly worn (for example, ripped wallpaper in the
elevators). The gym has nothing but cardio equipment (no weights or resistance machines) and in fact,
when you use the step machine, your head bumps into the low ceiling. When entering port, the ship
vibrated SO much from the engines that the Californians among us estimated it as a 10.0 on the Richter
(earthquake) scale. The vibration WILL wake you up early out of bed. In sum, this is one of those ships
that you can tell from your first look has been around quite a long time with little upkeep. RCCL
apparently knows this and has scheduled this ship for retirement from its fleet in early 2002.

Room service was quick, but the food quality was mediocre at best. And the room service waiter must be
tipped in cash... you can not sign for the tip.

The dining room staff was couteous but not personable. We frequently waited with empty water and
iced-tea glasses. Again, the food quality didn't compare to other cruiselines.

I think the bottom line of this cruise is that this is the bottom of the line for RCCL cruises. The 3/4 day
cruises out of L.A. are not on the newest or prettiest ships. With that expectation, the cruise isn't that
bad. Plus, it is a very cheap getaway. But, for a special trip such as a honeymoon or anniversary, I'd
recommend saving some additional cash and going on a Caribbean cruise out of Florida. If you've been
on a Caribbean cruise previously, this cruise will most likely be a disappointment.

This was mine and my girlfriends first ever cruise and we both had a fabulous time. I cant say enough about
our cabin steward "Rony". He did a fantastic job and always kept our room in great condition. The ship is older
and definitly shows its age; stains on the carpets, torn wallpaper and dirty windows. This however did not take
away any of the fun abord the ship. Food in the dining room was excellent. The different variety of food
offered and excellent service. On "formal" night the ships doctor and his family sat with us which was a neat
experience. The waiters were always there to make sure everything was to your liking. There were a couple of
complaints about the ship that I thought needed mentioning. First was the lack of space. The hallways were
very tight (of course, this could be fact for all ships) and getting around was a bit of a challenge due to the
tight spaces. The rocking of the ship was also a problem. The first night the rocking was endless. Everything
in the room creaked and just walking was a challenge. Of course, the free tablets of Dramamine helped. This
was definitly not a cruise to go on if your a young single. The average age of the passangers was about 50.
This would definitly be a cruise I would go on again and next time will know a little more about what to expect. I
recommend this cruise to everyone.
