This cruise was a 'seminar at sea' with our agency and my fourth cruise with RCI. My
experience before this
cruise to Alaska was limited due to the fact that I haven't gone myself. I have to say
that I too had
misconceptions of this being an 'older' person's cruise. Now I realize that this is
intended for everyone that
can appreciate untouched natural beauty and adventure. The average age on this particular
ship was
40-45 years old. My husband and I being very warm weather types, found this itinerary to
be refreshing.
Leaving 100 degrees weather, we enjoyed the much cooler weather with no wind. According to
the locals in
Alaska, ideally July is their overall best weather month. The Vision of the Seas was a
wonderful choice for
this itinerary. Vision and Rhapsody were actually built for Alaska. I was amazed by all of
the windows and
sitting areas for watching the incredible scenery. Don't forget your binoculars. This is a
beautiful ship. We
did notice that the carpets were somewhat worn down for a one year old ship, probably due
to the wet
weather conditions of this itinerary.
The dining room was very nice and the wait staff was RCI incredible.
They always seem happy to give you the extra lobster upon request during formal night! The
meeting
rooms where we our seminar classes were held were extremely crowded with bulky chairs.
This was very
unsuitable. Our cabin was a traditional RCI cabin with a very nice cabin steward who had
so much fun
making our bed. One night he made my new stuffed animals climb mountain pillows and made a
homemade
person using our clothes stuffed with pillows lying on our bed. We found the entertainment
to be a lot of fun
and good for all ages. The Masquerade Theater is very impressive. There was an incredible
amount of
seating and noticed every seat is visible without obstruction. The best design I've seen
yet. The indoor
solarium was a nice feature on this ship with the cooler itinerary. Besides the indoor
pool and cozy hot
tubs, hidden in this area is a sandwich/pizza snack bar. We had a veggie burger almost
daily that tied us
over until our late dinner.
Our first stop was at the breathtaking Hubbard Glacier. This was the highlight of
our cruise. The sound of the calving is like real thunder. We planned on just going
outside for maybe 30
minutes to check it out, but as we got closer we ended up staying outside for almost 3
hours total. Our
captain was so interactive with the passengers. He really made sure we didn't miss a
thing. During the
entire cruise, along with the naturalist onboard explaining a lot of what we were seeing,
our captain did as
well. We were informed ahead of time when whales were spotted on two different occasions.
This was so
amazing! This was an excursion all in it's self. Seeing the enthusiasm of other passengers
was a treat also.
Everyone appeared to really appreciate the natural sites and wonders of it all. Our first
port was Skagway.
We took the White Pass train ride. The train is really within steps off the ship. This was
very scenic. We
stood outside between the cars the whole time. We did miss the narration though. We had a
very
uncomfortable braking on the way back. Haines was our next quaint port. We went to a
salmon bake which
was very tasty but wished later that we had gone on the bear watch tour.
Through the ship it was very
expensive but as we got off the ship there were tours that were very inexpensive. This
little town had the
most breathtaking view. So beautiful it didn't look real. I would love to stay there for
an entire summer.
Juneau was our next stop and our tour led us to Mendenhall Glacier. Truly, after seeing
Hubbard glacier,
this was not as outstanding. Our float plane tour was cancelled due to it raining all day.
The ship was
docked by a lot of little shops! Our next port was Ketchikan. We went by tour to the
Saxman village.
Originally, I thought this sounded boring but it really was quite interesting. We learned
the stories behind
the craft. Again, the ship was close to all the shops! As we were leaving, we had seen
that there were a
couple people who missed the ship and we watched a little boat trying to get them back on.
We heard it
cost them $300. We cruised through Misty Fjords. This was too very natural beauty that you
probably can't
see anywhere else in North America. Our flight was later in the evening and had a
wonderful time in
Vancouver. We rented a car and spent some time in Stanley Park and drove through the
neighborhoods.
Overall, this cruise was more than a true adventure, I really felt proud to be able to
take in Alaska's
magnificent splendor. I will definitely cruise with RCI again. This cruise line continues
to be my favorite and
is a best seller in our agency. Alaska is unforgettable.

This was my first cruise. Yes I am REALLY 13, and I have just as much to say about my
cruise as
anyone else does.
EMBARKATION-We arrived before the 'rush' of people. This was very nice because we only had
to
wait in one line.(we only had 10 wait 5 min)Once we go through the line we were guided to
a room
with big windows that over looked the beautiful VISION OF THE SEAS! We sat down in the
chairs in
this room, and our family was given a number according to which we would board the ship.
We
didn't have to wait but 10 minutes, and our number was called. We walked through a passage
way
and a ship photographer took our picture and we were on our way up the gangway. I had
never
seen a ship before so naturally I was impressed with the size. So impressed that I just
stood on the
gangway and stared up at the ship. Once we were on the ship we were given directions to
get to
our room which we found without trouble. One problem was that our key to our room didn't
work at
first. This really frustrated my dad. We took our keys to the pursers desk, and within
five seconds
they were fixed!
The Ship-The ship was very beautiful. She did not show any signs of wearing. I walked in
the
centrum. I stared at the 'thingy' hanging from the ceiling in the centrum. During the
whole seven
day cruise, I was never able to figure out what that thing was! If you've been on this
ship you know
what I mean. When we explored the ship I was delighted to find a little water fall in the
atrium. I
must admit that it was a very nice touch.
The Cabin-The cabin had an outside balcony! It was beautiful! I really wasn't expecting
anything
from the cabin, but it was a very nice size, with plenty of room. However, the bathroom is
a different
story. It was microscopic! There was shelf space, but hardly enough. The shower was very
annoying. I would try to close the shower curtain all the way...but that was an impossible
task. No
matter how hard you tried, you could NOT close the shower curtain all they way. They
weren't long
enough. This resulted in your whole bathroom floor being wet after your shower. Very
disgusting.
One thing that my sister and I liked about the cabin televsion was that they always had
several
channels playing movies. They had one channel with cartoons...(for younger kids like my 10
year
old sister) They also had a channel with good movies (Message in a Bottle just to name
one) for
teens like me! This way when we were waiting for our parents to get ready to go someplace,
we
could have something fun to do. Our room steward, Patrick, was the BEST! He cleaned
everything! Every evening he would use towels and pillows to make different shapes on our
bed! It
was a really nice touch. If I ever wanted anything all I had to do was ask Patrick and I
got whatever
I wanted! This was wonderful. The beds were very nice, but the sheets seemed to be a
little bit
worn.
Entertainment-There was a lot of good entertainment on this ship. Near the pool on the top
deck
there was a band that was always playing. They were very talented men. There were also
some
piano players in the various lounges, they were good for old people like my parents. Every
night
we went to the show onboard the ship. I found that if you wanted a good seat at a show you
had to
arrive at least twenty minutes early. If you arrived at the last minute the seating was
limited. My
favorite show was by Peter Noone, formerly from the group Hermans Hermits. He was
extremely
entertaining. He gave me a free CD during the show. The next day he held an autograph
session.
Also, everyday in the centrum they had a art auction. None of my family participated in
these
auctions but they were fun to watch. I didn't really stay up for any of the late night
entertainment
because at the end of each day I was exhausted! But my parents went to a gameshow in the
Theatre one night, it was called the Newly-Wed game! My parents loved it, they talked
about it the
whole next day!
Food-The food on this ship was actually very good. We ate dinner in the dining room every
night.
We had the best waiters for our table! I don't remember their names, but they were
wonderful! On
the first night I ordered chocolate milk, and I drank two glasses of it! From then on,
every night
when we got to our table, there were two glasses of chocolate milk waiting for me! The
food was
good as I said earlier. They had a kids menu which was good for me because I'm a picky
eater. On
the kids menu they had pizza, hamburgers and hot dogs, along with other kid friendly
foods.
Everynight our waiter would bring my sister and I a plate of each dessert! I couldn't
believe it! I was
truly in heaven. The regular menu had seven courses and they had a good variety.
(According to
my mom) We really enjoyed our dinning experiences in the dinning room. We ate at the
Windjammer Cafe everyday for lunch and almost everyday for breakfast. The food here was
served buffet style. There was not a huge variety here, and the food was not great in
quality, but
our family managed. Most of the time the food here was luke warm and sometimes the pasta
looked as if it had been sitting there for a while. But the Windjammer did have a good
variety of
fruit, which pleased me. I had heard about 24 hour restraunts on other ships, but this
ship did not
have one. I was dissapointed, but hey, life goes on! However, this ship did have a snack
bar by the
indoor pool. At the snack bar you could get burgers, hotdogs, pizza by the slice and
french fries.
They were all served fresh and hot. Yum Yum.
Ports of Call-Of course, the most import part of the cruise are its ports of call! We went
to sooo
many ports its hard for me to remember them all, but they are as follows: Ketchican,
Hanes,
Skagway, Glacier Bay, Misty Fjords, and Juneau. My favorite port of call was Hanes! Just
as we
were sailing into the harbor the sun was rising over the mountains, it was spectacular! In
this town
we went went on a tour in a old car! Our tour guide knew a lot about Haines, probably
becuase
she lived there, but that is beside the point. She took us to drink some REAL mountain
spring
water. We got it straight from the mountain! It was better than any type of bottled water
could ever
be! In Skagway we went on a bus tour to the Klondike summit. I was about a two hour bus
ride,
long but not too boring. We could get out at designated points and take pictures. I must
warn you
that most people on this bus tour are senior citizens. Its not exactly an action packed
excursion. In
Juneau we went on a little boat to look for wildlife. This was probably my favorite
excursion. We
saw several Humpback whales, many Bald eagles, and some sea lions! On the boat we were
served a salmon spread on a bagel, along with fruit snacks. (for kids) After this fun
excursion we
were taken by bus back to the ship where we showered and grabbed a bite to eat. Then we
went
shopping. The shopping here is ok. Lots of touristy junk, if you want something authentic
this is not
the place to get it. After a couple hours of shopping we went back to the ship and got
ready to eat
dinner. The next day was Ketchican. Here we went on a historical boat tour. It was fun but
a bit
boring for us kids. We sailed through Glacier Bay, and Misty Fjords which were both
beautiful.
While sailing out of Ketchican I was in the solarium sitting in the hot tub. Let me tell
you that there
is nothing like sitting in the hot tub and watching beautiful scenery go by...nothing can
compare to
that, nothing!
Disembarking was easy and seemed to be organized. It was a sad time for my sister, she was
almost crying when we left the ship.(I don't know why) We had green tags on our luggage.
Once
off of the ship we went through the terminal, picked up or luggage and got on a bus that
took us to
the air port. All of this was easy and painless.
Throughout this cruise we made many friends and memories. It has been one of the most fun
things that I have ever done. I would recommend a RCL cruise to anyone who wants to have a
extraordinary vacation experience. My family is planning to take another cruise to Bermuda
in the
summer of 2000. We hope that this next cruise will be just as fun-filled as our last.
I hope that someone out there has found this 'essay' to be informative and worth while to
read. If
you have any questions or comments please, please email me at: Snwboardqueen@aol.com
Thanks for your time.

Here is my review of my January 29th sailing aboard the RCI Vision of the Seas. (I am an
experienced cruiser and have sailed with Holland America, Norwegian, Costa, Princess and Royal
Caribbean.) This was an 11 night Panama Canal cruise commencing in Acapulco and ending in San
Juan. First, the good things. This ship had the friendliest and most accommodating crew of any ship
I have been on. Also, for what it’s worth, the crew spoke English very well…far better than any crew I
have sailed with. The Cruise Director, Gordon, was outstanding and his entire staff superb. The
entertainment aboard was varied so there was something for everyone. The theatre is state of the
art and most impressive. The ship itself is nice, but not what I would call beautiful or classy looking. It
is also showing some wear, and is apparently about due for refurbishing.
Other reviewers on this
site and others have told horror stories about large groups of children running wild aboard this ship
during school vacation periods. I suspect the ship is showing the evidence of that. Fortunately, on
our sailing, children were not a problem. Activities aboard were well run, and properly scheduled,
giving you just enough things to do without overloading you. For those, like me, who are bothered
by cigarette smoke the good news is that the dining room and theatre are both non-smoking. The
lounges have smoking and non-smoking sides, but ventilation is not sufficient to prevent the smoke
from reaching the non-smoking areas.
This ship has two pools, one of which is covered and more or
less ‘indoors.’ This indoor pool area was largely smoke free, though it didn’t appear as if smoking
was forbidden. The casino has low ceilings and stinks of cigarette smoke to the point where I
couldn’t even walk through it, let alone consider playing in it. Still, this ship isn’t a real bad one to be
on if you don’t like smoke. Now for the negative side: the food. If the overall dining experience is the
key thing you look for on a ship, then avoid this one (and, likely also its sister ships.). The dining
room was pleasant, comfortable and well run. The service was excellent, and our waiter (female)
and assistant waiter were superb. The head waiter was attentive and responsive to our special
requests. So what’s the problem, you might ask? The food selection! Each night only one hot soup
and one salad, followed by 5-6 entrée selections. If you like American type food you’ll basically
starve. Almost every dinner had only one basic American choice (steak, pork, turkey). Other
selections were always something weird and generally Mexican or Indian. I ordered Osco Bucco
once and it came baked in a salsa sauce!
On an 11 night cruise, we had lobster tails just once, and
shrimp just twice. There was never a turkey dinner. Desserts were terrible the first 4-5 nights, and
then got better. However, they did strange things like offering four nice soufflé desserts but on
consecutive nights! Why not spread them out, we wondered? As to the quality of the food at dinner,
I would say it was acceptable but still at the bottom of the list of the 12 cruises I have been on. But
wait, it gets worse. If you like to take your breakfasts and lunches at the Lido Café or at the ship
‘snack bar’ you are in for a truly huge disappointment here. The Lido Café (called the Windjammer
Café on this ship) has the worst food and the worst variety of food I have ever seen aboard a cruise
ship. Even worse is the snack bar area where they serve hamburgers, hot dogs and what they call
Pizza. This food was barely edible. The hamburgers are cooked somewhere else and sit in a
stainless steel dish attaining a nice gray color and cooling off to room temperature until you order
one and it is slapped on a bun. The pizza appears to be made from the cardboard-like pre-made
dough you buy in a grocery store…the kind with little vent holes in the bottom! The sauce is
tasteless. Also, if you do choose to get something at the snack bar you have to either buy a
beverage there, or walk the full length of the ship to the Lido to get coffee, tea or water! Another
oddity, they never once retracted the roof over the Solarium Pool. I have no idea why. To
summarize: a nice ship with an extra fine crew, great activities and entertainment, but very
sub-standard food, especially away from the main dining room.

The Panama Canal cruise was wonderful. I traveled with my sister, mother and uncle. Every day the
weather was beautiful. It was never too humid during the cruise. Our flights going to San Juan went well. I
landed at 11:20AM, by 12:30 PM I was a the pier and by 1:30PM I was in my room. I was part of the first
400 to begin embarkation that is why it took an hour in line to check in. Once at the counter everything
went smoothly. My family arrived in San Juan at 3:15PM and they were at the pier by 4:00PM. My uncle
needed a wheelchair and it was provided for him from the bus to his room. Check in was handled quickly
for them. My luggage arrived in my room around 2:30PM. I hadn't handled them since I left Sacramento. I
was unpacked and settled in the room before my sister arrived. Her luggage also arrived to the room
within two hours. We enjoyed our shore excursion to Coral World on St. Thomas. We like doing the shore
excursions through the ship and letting them make all the arrangements. Even though it costs a little
more, the time saved is worth it to us.
After returning to the ship and having lunch, my sister and I went
shopping at Havensight Mall which is right at the dock. We each found just what we were looking for
without the congestion of going downtown. In Curacao, we took the trolley shore excursion. My uncle took
the taxi back to the ship and my mom, sister and I stayed in town to do some shopping. They take US
dollars and give change in US currency. Of course, for larger purchases credit cards are accepted and
converted to US dollars so you know exactly what you are paying. From town, we could see our ship
docked at the mega pier. We decided to walk back to the ship. It was an easy and safe walk back, even
for my 77 year old mother. The Panama Canal is fascinating. We watched things from decks 5, 9, 10, and
11 at various times throughout the day. For an up close view of how the locks work go to deck 5. It wasn't
crowded and you can see the whole process.
While going through Gatun Lake, sitting in air conditioning
in the Viking Crown lounge was nice. We could see both sides of the ship from our seats by the window in
the front of the lounge. To pass under the Bridge of the Americas we liked deck 10. We took the Paos
Volcano tour in Costa Rico. The crater was clouded over, but it was an excellent trip. The lunch provided
was delicious and so was the coffee. There is a large souvineer shop in Sarchi which is an included stop
on the tour. Our tour guide was very knowledgable and helpful. The restrooms at all the stops were nice
and clean. At the end of the pier, there were little stands set up, but there wasn't much to do in town. We
were happy with our shore excursion. We booked the Acapulco city tour which ended at the airport. Our
bags were handled for us. Just keep your carry on bag with you. Many people on the ship decided to
take this tour.
The stop at the jewelery factory was interesting and there was time to shop. The cliff divers
was fascinating and they gave us a canned soda to drink while we watched the five divers. The only
unnecessary stop on this tour was at the Princess Hotel. We could use the restrooms, but not shop. We
had to stay with our guide as we toured the hotel grounds. It is only five minutes to the airport from the
hotel so the restroom break is not needed at this time. I hope Royal Caribbean offers some other stop for
future passengers. I had air/sea tickets. At the airport, I was informed by the ticket agent that I did not
have a confirmed seat for my connecting flight out of Phoenix. I contacted a RCI man at the airport. I was
passed on to several people, but no one could help me. They said try to get a flight in Phoenix. There
are very few seats in the Acupulco airport and I had to wait 4 and a half hours until my flight left. There
are not the usual airport shops to pass the time in while waiting. Customs in Phoenix went well and the
passenger service rep of America West was very helpful finding a seat for me on the next plane to
Sacramento which was another 3 hour wait. I paid $35.00 for the air deviation to be able to take the
Acapulco city tour, but my original flight I was booked on no longer existed by the time I actually flew. I
contacted my travel agent before leaving for the trip about the poor connections, but she said it was what
RCI set up and it should be okay. Wow, was she wrong! For the most part, I enjoy RCI and certainly
would cruise again with them. The Vision class ships are just the right size for me. There are plenty of
activities and plenty of lounge chairs to relax in. I use both the indoor and outdoor pools and the
steamroom and sauna. They are great. I like having sodas with lunch and dinner included with the meal. I
have cruised 4 times with RCI and three of those times I have been given the wrong color of luggage tags
for debarkation. I went to the pursers desk to straighten it out, she couldn't help me and told me to come
back again that is what the man told me to do the first time I checked on getting the right color. Our cabin
steward was fantastic and he straightened it out for me. If it happens to you, check with your cabin
steward first!
