This was our second cruise with Renaissance (the first was with Renaissance III around
Bali 18 months ago). We love the ships because they are
small, they have suites, and the dress code is 'casual elegance' (i.e., none of those
formal nights as on big ships). On both trips we have found
our fellow travellers well-travelled and interesting. The ships have been criticized for
having little or no entertainment; that is true, but that is not
a drawback for us. We had cabin 602, which has a balcony, and liked it better than the
non-balcony suite we had on Renaissance III. The hotels
which were part of the on-shore package were first rate and the shore excursions were
excellent. The cruise director is very fair and doesn't try
to push the shore excursions; there were always options for people to go their own way.
Our ports of call included Visby, Sweden (on the island
of Gotland); Helsinki, Finland; St. Petersburg, Russia (where we spent two days); and
Tallinn, Estonia. Our package included three pre-cruise
nights at the Radisson SAS Scandinavia in Copenhagen and three post-cruise nights at the
Sergel Plaza Hotel in Stockholm. We did not take
Renaissance's air package -- they frankly buy the lowest cost tickets available and some
of our fellow travellers were on Finnair and others on
Icelandic Air -- in other words, you don't know how you'll fly and it may not be the
airline or route you want or that is most convenient. I will take
Renaissance again in a flash!!

?Feb. 16, 2001 my wife and I boarded the R-6 looking forward to a lavish, fun cruise. This did not
happen. We will not book with Renaissance again. The ship was very clean, well laid out and the
Suites were very comfortable. The lower rated crew members were very friendly & helpful. The higher
rated crew members (tour & reception desks) were not helpful and seemed upset you were bothering
them with some question, in general not friendly at all. The food was poor to fair. When on previous
cruises we always looked forward to the meals, not this time. The food was well presented, in general
no flavor, tough meat and mushy fish. It appeared most of the food was prepared else where, frozen
then defrosted and served aboard ship. This includes the deserts. The breads were very good, thank
goodness. I filled up on them. The waiters were very rushed, because of this the service was well
below par. The Maitre’ds all acted like they were doing you a favor. They also charge extra for
everything, they seemed to be more concerned about selling you something then making you feel
welcome. Every night you received the Good Times news letter, it was like getting the Daily Shopper.
We did enjoy the ports of call and the tours over all were good.
