The Ren VIII is an all-suite ship carrying 114 passengers. We had
only 55 on board for our cruise, which resulted in limited food
variety and cancellation of three land tours. Our cabin (one
level above the minimum) was nice, but not much bigger that
regular cabins we have had on other ships. It was richly
appointed and had several uncommon amenities such as a
refrigerator and a VCR. We had two portholes, although the
brochure promised windows. The one open seating for dinner was
not to our liking. We prefer to eat earlier and have regular
tablemates. The deck service was insufficient for a full meal, so
we ate in the dining room three times a day. For breakfast and
lunch, much of the service was buffet style and was only fair in
quality. The waiter service was excellent however when we ordered
off the menu. The ports of call were excellent and tour
management was good. We were disappointed to miss three booked
tours when they were cancelled due to lack of participants.
Renaissance offered air upgrades to business class for only $300
per person. With the cruise discount from the brochure rate, the
overall value of this cruise was excellent. There was no
entertainment except for musicians in the lounge and no shipboard
activities to speak of. Dress was 'elegantly casual' at all
times. While we missed some of the features of the larger ships,
the overall value of this cruise was excellent with the discount
and the low priced air upgrade. We would definitely go with
Renaissance again.
