As my fifth cruise and the first on Seabourn, and my husband's first civilian cruise after
being a
Commanding Officer of an aircraft carrier and nine at sea cruises on Navy ships, we were
truly
impressed. The ratio of 147 staff to only 200 passengers made us feel like we were on a
private
yacht. Within hours of boarding, everyone knew our names.
At the beach barbecue on the private island, the ship tendered over the china, crystal,
linens and
silver, then waiters in full uniform brought champagne and caviar to us out in the water
while we
were floating in the bay.
The restaurant featured a menu that would rival any 5 star restaurant, and special
requests were
handled with a smile. The complimentary wine was always a winner. The open seating policy
allowed us to dine with whomever we chose, or just ourselves at a cozy table for two.
The rooms were spacious with a sitting area to look out the 3 foot picture windows, which
made
spending time in the cabin pleasant.
The shore tours were wonderful and a good value. This is a cruise for those that want to
feel like
they are staying at a floating Ritz, without all the crowds, silly games and typical
tourists. The
Seabourn is not set up for families with children, which appealed to us. We enjoyed our
cruise so
much, we booked our next two cruises while still onboard.

Our Caribbean cruise had several problems, the first of which was a very windy week of weather, making the ride
rough and the shore experience somewhat unpleasant. At our first stop, St. Martin, we could not go ashore at all
and had to sail on to St. Barth. The day on St. Barth was also cut short by windy seas and the inability to safely
tender ashore. Only the day on Virgin Gorda was successful and the beach Barbecue put on by the ship staff
was superb. The last stop, Ponce, PR, was an unequivocal disaster -- what a dump, with nothing to see or do.
Given all the beautiful islands in the region, the choice of Ponce as a shore day was incomprehensible.
The other real drawback was the cuisine in the main dining room. Given the Seabourn reputation and the cost of
the cruise, the food was a real disappointment. The menu was generally OK, with plenty of variety, but the
execution was quite mediocre, more like what one would find in a moderate hotel banquet room than in a fine
restaurant . Service was spotty, and only when one of the waiters took it upon himself to look after our us for the
rest of the trip did we feel well taken care of. The Italian theme dinner we had in the informal Veranda Cafe was
essentially inedible.
The cabins are spacious, luxurious, and well maintained, and the ship is beautiful and quite comfortable, but the
sports equipment and game room ammenities seemed to be rather neglected (one of the game tables was
missing a leg and the shuffleboard set had been broken on a prior cruise and never replaced). The video library
had no recent releases. Given the paucity of organized activities, it seemed a minimal expectation that the
supplies for entertaining oneself should be adequate and available for use ( the fitness center, however, was
surprisingly large and well-equipped for a small ship).
When a cruise line promotes itself as providing an exclusive luxury experience, the level of expectation is
commensurately high, so when the cruise doesn't live up to its reputation, it's doubly disappointing. The ship's
staff was enthusiastic and generally eager to please, so I suspect that the problems can be attributed to an
inattentive management.
