In spite of some of the low ratings I gave, I had a wonderful time on this cruise. I
sailed back-to-back cruises, so I
was on the ship 2 full weeks. I used the 'guaranteed single' option so that my brother and
I could have separate
cabins. We were both lucky to get portholes. Other passengers were not so fortunate. There
were lots of empty
cabins in the more expensive catagories, and I was surprised that the hotel manager
refused to upgrade anybody
unless they paid the full catalog price. I thought that he could have at least moved
everyone out of the half dozen
cabins with bunk beds.
I enjoyed the people my brother and I met on the trip, and the atmosphere was very
relaxing. The Thailand and
Malaysia water is beautiful, and Phang Nga Bay is breathtaking. I enjoyed the jet-boat
trip to 'James Bond island'
because it also went to a scenic fishing village and gave us a close look at sea caves. I
was disappointed in our
visit to Lankawi. Almost all shops were closed because of Chinese New Year. The itinerary
seemed pretty flexible,
so it seems that day could have been used as a beach and water sports day. A lot of
attention was given to the
income-producing scuba diving, but the snorkelers were often taken to shaded or murky
water late in the day. Far
more people used snorkels than scuba gear, so they should have gotten equal consideration.
I did both, so I was
able to see the difference in service.
I gave cleanliness the low review because of roaches in the two cabins directly behind the
crew's quarters. Even
after complaining, the hotel manager would not move them. I had no trouble with roaches in
my cabin to the rear
of the ship, but there was a horrible sewer smell near the gift shop. The smell and
roaches persisted the entire 2
weeks.
As I said earlier, the cruise was a great experience for me, and I would sail with Star
Clippers again for the right
itinerary.
