The overall cruise experience was excellent, and it certainly met or exceeded our
expectations. The food and service in the restaurant was very
good to excellent, in both selection and quality. Our cabin steward was excellent, and all
of the staff were very helpful and made a great effort to
know our names by the second day of cruising. The duo of keyboardist and guitarist in the
lounge was entertaining and provided a diversion for
those of us who were up and about after dinner. We never felt crowded or regimented the
entire week. Because of rough sailing we had to remain
in port(Rome) the first night, but a bus trip to Rome was quickly planned. We chose to
wander through Civitavecchio and thoroughly enjoyed
ourselves. The Cruise Staff was very knowledgeable about each port and the excursions were
well planned and reasonable in price. There was no
rush to sign up for them and they were made available to everyone, even at the last
moment. The only negative aspect of the cruise was that the
water programs, for which Windstar is known, were poorly planned and announced. Part of
this resulted from the rough surf, but it was also due to
an inexperienced water sports staff (not a valid excuse), one of whom was ill. I imagine
that this is more important in the Caribbean and Tahiti, and
the programs are probably more organized on these cruises. The pool is a joke, as it is
about the same size as the jacuzzi, but filled with very cold
water. The boat is small, but there is more than enough deck space, and never a crowded
feeling. However, I was impressed with the fitness room,
which was small, but contained two treadmills and two exercise bicycles as well as weight
lifting equipment and a sauna. Needless to say, there was
never a line waiting to get in, and I was able to walk away the pounds I otherwise might
have gained. All in all, it was a wonderful week, and we are
ready to investigate another cruise, possibly on Windstar, for 1999.

Our experience on the Windstar "repositioning" cruise was a huge disapointment.
We arranged to embark the ship at the first
port of call, Paphos, Cyprus, (not very unusal) but they changed plans to stop there, and
went to Limassol instead without
notifying any passengers who planned to board in Paphos. Result was a terrifying day
travelling around Cyprus trying to find the
ship. Found it only by chance. It seems that the Operational side of the Windstar failed
to notify the Reservations side about
change in plans. Otherwise, it is a nice ship, and well suited for relatively small groups
to just relax. However, it is badly in need
of refurbishment--airconditioning in our cabin was either stuck on or stuck off. Food was
good, but a bit monotonous. Service
people were excellent. This was a 1 day cruise in winter weather which necessitated much
time spent indoors but there were
very few planned activities, and these were last minute arrangement, only after passengers
complained. The cabins were nice
size, and very quiet, room service excellent, and cabin steward very good. On the whole, I
doubt I would take it again.
