We looked forward to our Windstar cruise, because, it was not the big ship and the itinary
was somewhere out of
the ordinary. From a positive point of view I must say that the size of the ship was
perfect, it was well maintained,
and sailing couldn't have been nicer. Tahiti is a beautiful place, and one that I would
recommend to those that want to
visit somewhere different. It is very safe, the people, contrary to public opinion were
very friendly on all the islands.
Also, the islands and clean, and you feel very safe anywhere you go. With all the problems
in the Carribean, this was
a welcome change.
When this ship was designed, it was done well. The cabins, although a bit small, have been
so well planned that you
could have twice the space and it wouldn't be as functional. The designers did their
homework. The cabin steward
could have been more attentive, considering the price of the cruise, we did expect a lot.
However, there were quite a
few things that made us wonder if the value was really there.
The hotel staff seemed to have a real attitude problem. We were with friends one night at
dinner, and one person
ordered fish, and received something that resembled a pork chop. He contacted the waiter
who actually argued with
him about the fact that it was fish. Instead of just replacing it, he called someone else
over to argue. Finally after a
firm request for a replacement, it did get the proper food. However, the waiter informed
him that he tried a piece of
his food and it was fish. Frankly, this was quite a rude awakening, considering we were
paying for something special.
The food was not anything interesting....Celebrity Cruises has a much more interesting
menu and better presentation.
To sum it up, we felt that perhaps the fact that the staff did not receive tips, made them
give poor service. I don't
know, but we were not pleased.
When we returned, I wrote a long letter the the president of Windstar, after several weeks
I received a generic
"thank you for writing" letter, with not one answer to why was the service poor,
etc. They actually had the nerve to
tell us at that "we look forward to seeing you again on another Windstar
Cruise." For the cost, I don't think the value
is there. Although the ship is wonderful, they seem to be relying on that and not anything
else. By the way, they are
going to leave Tahiti and move the ship to Costa Rica in the Fall.
Would we go again? Probally, because it was the most reasonable way to see Tahiti and the
other islands. However,
I question how Windstar is rated so high.
